Name of Assignment: Merwin Conservancy Garden Visit
Subject: ENG 104 Creative Writing Facilitator/Teacher: Professor Madhuri Vijay
Description of Work/Assignment: Going to the Merwin Conservancy Garden, reading his works, and learning about the history of the garden.
Which 21st Century Skill do you feel this assignment addresses, and why? This assignment addresses civic literacy and engagement. In this assignment, I learned how I could participate to restore the native species of the Hawaiian Islands like how W. S. Merwin did in his garden. We also took care of and looked at different species of palms that the garden specialized in restoring.
How did you develop and/or improve upon your 21st Century Skill with this assignment? I developed my 21st Century Skills with this assignment by actively participating in the Maui community and learning techniques to preserve the native palm species.
What are you most proud of from this assignment, and why? I am proud of this assignment because it involved a challenging hike across lots of uneven terrains with a broken leg.
What was most difficult about completing this task?
The most grueling part of this task was fighting the brutal attacks of thousands of different mosquitos and trying to balance on the loose and wet soil. It was painful on the stress fracture in my leg and my ankles still have bumps on them from the mosquito bites How could you improve this work? If you could start over, what would you do differently? I could improve this work by being more dedicated to his garden and focusing more on the scenery and the history. The garden was very distracting because of all the mosquitos and I missed out on some important information about the garden and the techniques that he used to restore it.

How does this relate to what you have learned in the past? This is similar to what I learned in my population ecology unit in field ecology. There were many similarities with how the invasive species took over the area that the native species used to live in.
How can you apply this to future learning? I could apply this to future learning in field ecology because we are likely to learn about invasive vs. native species again in the future.
